Public Works

The Public Works Department of the Borough of Brielle employs thirteen men who perform a multitude of tasks for the four divisions (listed below) within the Department. The divisions are: Streets and Roads, Water/Sewer, Buildings and Grounds and Mechanics. They are led by Superintendent, William A. Burkhardt, Jr. and Assistant Superintendent Robert McArthur. While some men have specific duties, the departments are small enough to require that every man fill whatever task is needed, including management. The Department is always on call to meet any emergency that may arise. Regular working hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  1. The Water and Sewer Department manages the daily operation of the water and sewer plants and pump stations, does preventative maintenance of the sewer mains and installs and maintains the water meters, checks for accuracy, reads the meters and performs water shut-offs.
  2. The Road Department repairs the roads, sweeps the streets, collects leaves and brush, chips brush and maintains a wood chip pile for residential use, collects and markets recyclables and maintains the recycling center.
  3. Buildings and Grounds duties include maintenance of all borough buildings and properties, including parks and plantings, the borough yard, the heavily used Curtis House, library and borough hall.
  4. The Mechanics Department maintains the borough vehicles including the Police vehicles.

Fall Yard Waste Schedule

Leaf Collection Begins October 1 and ends December 15

No brush Collection October 15 to December 15, resumes December 15

NEW RULES: NO LEAVES OR BRUSH MAY BE PLACED WITHIN TEN FEET OF ANY STORM DRAIN!

Fall leaf collection was greatly hampered by those who ignored borough restrictions and placed brush at the curb during leaf season, often mixed among leaves.

This schedule will be strictly enforced. Leaves set out at the curb at any time other than the above scheduled dates will not be collected by the Borough. Residents will be required to remove them and make their own disposal arrangements.

Leaves: Placed at the curb loose, free of other material such as garden waste and brush. Leaves in bags will not be collected.

Garden Waste: Weeds and plants, collected year round. Should be kept separate from leaves.

Brush Collection: No pickup October 15th to December 15th. Borough trucks will be equipped for leaf collection. Please keep brush on property, Do not place in the street. Vacuum trucks need clear access to leaves. Limbs should not exceed 6 inches in diameter. No stumps.

In case of storms, branches will be picked up, regardless of schedule or size.

Wood Chips Year round - free for the taking, delivery upon request.

A supply of wood chips is available in the Brielle Park (near the tennis court parking lot). Also, truckloads of chips can be delivered to your property, free of charge, by calling public works at 528-9389 or 528-5210(answering machine).

Grass Clippings Do not set out at any time!

Grass clippings, banned from the landfill and most disposal sites, are not collected by the Borough.

Cut it and leave it or compost instead and use the valuable nutrients. Call Borough Hall for other disposal options.

Composting: Year round help is available

Don’t forget to feed your compost bin or pile. Turn occasionally and water when necessary. It likes year round attention and will reward you accordingly. If you are not already composting your yard waste and food scraps, this is a good time to begin. If you need help, call 528-6600 ext. 11 and help will be on its way.

BACK YARD COMPOST: Add clippings to your compost pile. They are an excellent source of nitrogen. Mix thoroughly with leaves or old compost. Join the proud and growing number of Brielle residents already onboard. Did you know that our mayor "leaves it on the lawn" and has been a long time composter? We call him our "Mulching Mayor".*

A Plea

Please limit your visits to the recycling center for disposal of only those materials the borough doesn't pick up. Twice a month collection of newspapers and commingled containers is provided. Materials collected curbside are transported directly to the market. Those brought to the yard require additional handling and manpower. Increased traffic in the yard impacts the public works operation there. Remember, we also share the yard with Manasquan for gassing up vehicles.

Red Flag Alert

The recycling center closes from time to time while recyclables are transferred to trucks for delivery to the market. These closings are necessary for the safety of our residents and the efficiency of the operation. They usually occur on Monday and Friday mornings and last for about an hour.

Now you will know of each closing before you turn into the public works driveway. A red flag, marked closed, will be posted at the entrance sign. Hope this helps.

This suggestion was made by one of our residents. Thank You, Judy! We welcome suggestions. Ed

Your patience is appreciated.

FROM THE WATER AND SEWER DEPARTMENT

The Water and Sewer department is currently attempting to contact any

homeowner who has a "Stopped" or non-functioning meter. You can assist us by

checking your next water bill that will be due December 1st. If your current meter

reading (on the left side of your bill) have the letter E after them, this indicates an

estimated bill. The bill may be estimated for various reasons, but most likely, your

meter has stopped and needs replacing.

Repairs are done by appointment only. If you see you have an estimated bill,

please call Colleen at 732-528-6600 ext 5. Please be advised that appointments

will be a range, either 8:30-11:30 am or 1:00-3:00 pm. Thank You for your

cooperation.
